DACOWITS History of Recommendations - Fall Conference 1989

Recommendations:

1. Women in Army Field Artillery
DACOWITS recommends that the Secretary of the Army keep Field Artillery open to women and that opportunities be expanded by reopening LANCE firing batteries and opening Multiple Launch Rocket Systems (MLRS) at the Corps level.

2. Women in Naval Mobile Construction Battalions (NMCB)
DACOWITS continues to recommend that the Secretary of Defense take such steps as necessary to authorize the immediate assignment of women to NMCB's, as recommended by the DoD Task Force on Women in the Military.

3. Women in the Army - 4 Year Test Program
DACOWITS recommends that the Army conduct a 4-year test program under which women in the Army will be allowed to enter all military occupational specialties (including combat and combat support).

4. State Department Awareness of Women Marine Security Guards (MSG)
DACOWITS recommends the Marine Corps ensure that all embassies and consulates are advised again that women Marines are authorized to serve as MSG.

5. GAO Study of Service Academies
DACOWITS recommended that DoD request GAO include the Coast Guard Academy in its study of the Service Academies. Comparative attrition rates for male and female cadets and midshipmen, and reasons for attrition should also be included.

6. Nurse Shortages
DACOWITS recommends that the Secretary of Defense take timely and positive action to resolve nurse accession, retention, compensation, promotion, and motivation issues through appropriate measures to include legislation.

7. Aircrew members' Removal from Flying Status by the Air Force
DACOWITS recommends that the Secretary of the Air Force reconsider the decision to remove women Aircrew members from flying status for 30 days when they are placed on a course of oral contraceptive therapy.

8. Air Force Uniforms
DACOWITS recommends that the Secretary of the Air Force expand the uniform options for women toinclude a winter coat and a maternity coat.
